Skeletal Structure

Radrians share a digitigrade hind structure with a flexible, slightly arched spine that lets them rear onto their hindlegs for short bursts. Forelimbs remain closer to the ground in most subspecies, giving a low, alert stance.

The Radrian skeleton sits somewhere between a browsing quadruped and an upright biped. The spine carries a slight natural arch through the shoulders, giving clearance for a short rear-up onto the hindlegs — used far more often for reaching high browse or signalling alarm than for true bipedal walking.

Forelimbs are semi-plantigrade, contacting the ground along more of the foot than the hindlegs do, which trades some speed for stability on uneven forest and mountain terrain. Mountain and Tundra subspecies carry noticeably denser bone structure than Coastal or Sunreach populations, an adaptation to impact and cold rather than speed.

The crown is grown and shed annually, thickening with age. Growth begins each spring beneath a velvet-like skin that is rubbed away once the antler hardens. Crown shape is inherited but always individually unique.

Every Radrian crown begins the same way: a soft, velvet-skinned bud that emerges in early spring and hardens into keratin-bone composite over several months. The final shape is influenced by lineage and region, but no two crowns branch identically, making the crown the single most reliable way to identify an individual at a glance.

Crowns are shed in late winter, usually within a few days across an entire clan — a synchronised event that keepers and Radrians alike treat as a small seasonal milestone. Regrowth the following spring is typically slightly larger and more complex than the year before, which is why crown size is used informally to estimate age.

Pelage & Coloration

Coat density and colour track directly to region — a rule of thumb keepers use when designing new Radrians. Undercoats shed seasonally in all but the tundra variant, which retains a double coat year-round.

A Radrian's coat is made of two layers: a coarser outer guard hair that sheds water and light, and a softer undercoat that provides insulation. Most subspecies moult this undercoat twice a year, in spring and autumn, while Tundra Radrians retain their thick double coat year-round to survive the Glassfrost's cold.

Coloration correlates closely with region — pale and sand-toned along the coast and dunes, deep umber and moss beneath the forest canopy, frost-white on the tundra — which keepers use as a practical starting point when designing a new Radrian's palette, even for mixed-heritage individuals.

A Radrian's ears rotate almost independently of one another, giving near-360° coverage and making hearing the single sharpest sense across every subspecies. Eyes sit slightly toward the sides of the skull, trading some depth perception directly ahead for an unusually wide overall field of view — useful for spotting predators from nearly any angle.

Scent plays an important social role as well as a practical one: clan members recognise one another partly by scent markers left at shelter thresholds, and a stranger's scent is often noticed before they're ever seen.

Radrians are browsing omnivores with a multi-chambered stomach that ferments tougher plant matter slowly, similar in principle to a ruminant, letting them extract nutrition from bark and lichen that would otherwise be indigestible. Diet shifts noticeably with the seasons and the region a clan calls home.

Coastal clans supplement their diet with foraged tide-crab, Sunreach clans rely more heavily on root vegetables and the occasional Sandrunner Lizard, and Marsh clans favour the reeds and tubers native to the Marrowfen. Nothing about the digestive system prevents cross-region diets — it's largely a matter of availability.

Radrians typically bond for life within their clan, and calves are born in early summer after a gestation of roughly nine months, almost always as a single calf rather than a litter. A newborn calf is mobile within hours but stays close to its bonded family group for the first year.

A calf's first crown emerges within that first year as a small, simple bud — nothing like the branching structure it will eventually grow — and is shed and regrown annually from then on, gradually taking on the shape that will identify the individual for the rest of their life.
