OVERVIEW

The Radrians are an original, open species native to the forests, peaks, fens, and coastlines of Esterasul. Every Radrian carries a crown of antlers unique to their bloodline, a coat suited to their home region, and a quiet, clannish way of life built around shared shelters called szałasy. This page collects the essentials — origin, classification, society, and the design principles that keep every Radrian recognisable.

ORIGIN

Where the Radrians Come From

Radrians are said to have descended from the first herds that sheltered beneath the Emberwood canopy during the long winter of Esterasul's founding myth.

The founding myth of Esterasul tells of a winter so long that the first herds sheltering beneath the Emberwood canopy nearly starved, until they learned to read the forest's signs closely enough to survive it. Whether or not the myth is literal, it's the story every clan still tells calves before their first crown grows in.

As clans pushed outward from the Emberwood over many generations, the land itself reshaped them — antlers, coats, and instincts drifting to match each new region until six distinct populations emerged, documented in full on the Subspecies page.

CLASSIFICATION

What Makes a Radrian

A Radrian is defined less by strict anatomy and more by three shared traits: an antler crown, digitigrade hindlegs, and clan-based social bonding.

Build: quadruped or semi-biped
Crown: always present, shape varies
Bonding: lifelong clan ties

Because Radrians vary so much by region, the species is defined more by three consistent traits than by a single fixed silhouette: an antler crown present in every individual, digitigrade hindlegs, and a deep, lifelong bond to a clan structure. Everything else — coat, exact build, crown shape — is left open.

This looseness is intentional. It lets keepers design a Radrian suited to any of Esterasul's regions, or a mixed-heritage individual straddling two, without ever breaking from what makes the species recognisable at a glance.

SOCIETY

Clan Life

Radrians live in small kin-groups called clans, rarely larger than twenty individuals, and build szałasy shelters that can last for generations.

A Radrian clan is rarely larger than twenty individuals, small enough that every member knows every other by scent as much as by sight. Clans build and rebuild szałasy shelters on the exact same ground for generations, treating the site itself — not just the structure standing on it — as an inherited thing.

Leadership within a clan tends to be informal, settling naturally around the eldest or most experienced members rather than any fixed title, and decisions that affect the whole clan are usually made collectively rather than handed down.

SYMBOLISM

The Antler Crown

A Radrian's crown is read the way a face is read elsewhere — its branching pattern signals age, health, and clan lineage.

Because coat colour can vary even within a single clan, it's the crown that Radrians actually rely on to recognise one another at a distance — its branching pattern is as individual as a face, and clan members learn to read health, age, and mood from how it's carried.

A crown held low and forward is a warning; one held high and open is a greeting. Losing a crown to injury outside the normal shedding season is considered deeply unlucky, and clans will often shelter an injured member closely until regrowth begins the following spring.

TERMINOLOGY

Words Worth Knowing

Szałasy — clan shelters. Crown — the antler structure. Clans are typically named for their home region.

Szałasy refers to the shelters a clan builds and rebuilds on the same ground across generations — half structure, half heirloom. Crown is the standard term for a Radrian's antler structure, used instead of "antlers" throughout this archive to reflect how central it is to identity.

Clans are typically named for the region they call home — Forestclan, Peakclan, Fenclan, Shoreclan, Frostclan, and Duneclan being the most common groupings, though mixed-heritage clans near region borders sometimes carry compound names of their own.

DESIGN GUIDE

Making Your Own

As an open species, anyone may design a Radrian. Keep the three core traits, then let region, personality, and lineage decide the rest.

Designing a Radrian starts with the three core traits — a crown, digitigrade hindlegs, and a clan bond — and everything past that is a choice. Picking a home region first (see the Subspecies page) is the fastest way to land on a coherent coat, build, and crown shape, though mixed heritage across two neighbouring regions is entirely canon.

From there, personality and lineage are free to shape the rest: unusual crown patterns, scars, off-palette coats, and other individual quirks are all welcome as long as the three core traits stay intact.

A Note on Open Design

Esterasul is a collaborative world. Radrians can be designed by anyone following the core traits outlined above, and clans, colours, and crown shapes are free to mix across regions — migration and mixed heritage are both canon. Use the Subspecies page for regional starting points and the Anatomy page for structural reference.
